When Food For All Seasons moved into its new “dream” kitchen we were thrilled with our new space. For the first time our kitchen staff could look out of the large windows when they cooked and feel a part of the seasons as they changed. One of our big wishes was to be able to raise some herbs and flowers to use as part of the garnish for our platters.
There was some land next to the kitchen that was not in use. It had been a dumping ground and a place for various groups of people to “hang-out". In their wake they left empty bottles, hypodermic needles and the like. We decided that this might be a good location to start our garden.
The project commenced. The land was cleared and cleaned. Loads of topsoil was brought in and plants were planted. It has been a gradual but rewarding project. Last year our own Mary Bradley painted a lovely mural on one of our garden walls. She painted the bronze dancers who were discovered at Herculaneum in Southern Italy. These dancers were buried and lost to the world when Mount Vesuvio erupted in 79 AD. Our garden site was lost as well until it was rediscovered and planted for Food For All Season's use and enjoyment. We are very proud of the many varieties of heirloom tomatoes that we grow. In addition, we are growing lettuces, eggplants, potatoes, fennel, and numerous fresh herbs and flowers. These fresh vegetables and flowers are used daily, in season, by our kitchen staff in the foods that they prepare for you, our clients. It is a labor of love and one that we are all committed to. |
